Preventative Care

Health Care Reform

One of the important new rights the Affordable Care Act allows is access to many life-saving preventative care services at no cost to their insured. Eligibility for the tests may depend upon your age and there are some other intricacies to this new benefit that you need to understand before you schedule one of these procedures.

Here are just some of the preventative services you may be eligible for:*

  • Cancer screening tests such as mammograms and colonoscopies at particular intervals based on your age.

  • Cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure screenings

  • Vaccinations to combat diseases such as polio and measles

  • Shots to prevent flu or pneumonia

  • Health pregnancy counseling

  • Well baby and well child visits including check ups and vaccinations

Below are a few details to know before you schedule your preventative care to ensure you are not charged unnecessarily*:

  • This benefit is for health insurance plans put into effective after March 23, 2010. If you signed up for a plan before that date, you most likely will need to wait until your “new plan” year or anniversary date goes into effect on or after the implementation date of September 23, 2010

  • Your plan may require you to use “In-network providers.” If your doctor orders tests, make sure they are on the official list, you are in the appropriate age range, and you are using an “In-network” provider. Otherwise, you may be responsible for a portion or all of the fees for the services.

  • Check with your doctor or health care provider and your health insurance company for clarification. The best way to check with your insurance company is to call the customer service number on your health insurance ID card and ask for preventative care benefit details.
